‎The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Shehu Usman Osidi, has announced that the Bank will officially launch its Diaspora NHF Mortgage Loan on August 7, 2026, in London, United Kingdom, marking a major milestone in extending affordable housing finance to eligible Nigerians living and working abroad.

‎Osidi made the announcement while delivering a goodwill message at the 2026 National Diaspora Day Celebration in Abuja on Friday, July 24, 2026.

‎He said the landmark initiative was developed to provide Nigerians in the Diaspora with a safe, transparent and sustainable pathway to own homes in Nigeria while strengthening their economic and emotional connection with the country.

‎"This launch represents a significant milestone in our collective efforts to deepen access to housing finance for Nigerians wherever they may reside," he said , adding that the launch is "a fulfilment of the Bank's commitment to providing a trusted and credible platform through which Nigerians abroad can confidently pursue their dream of owning a home in Nigeria."

‎He emphasized that the product would provide eligible Nigerians in the Diaspora with the opportunity to invest in homeownership, build long-term wealth, plan for retirement in Nigeria and contribute to the development of the nation's housing market.

‎"Beyond homeownership, we expect the initiative to stimulate housing construction, create employment, deepen mortgage penetration, promote greater formalization of housing transactions, strengthen confidence in the Nigerian mortgage system and facilitate increased Diaspora investment in the Nigerian economy," he added.

‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to harnessing the expertise and resources of Nigerians in the Diaspora to accelerate national development.

‎"We know the challenges our healthcare system faces; inadequate infrastructure in many communities, shortages of skilled medical personnel, gaps in research, innovation and specialised care, policy inconsistency, and so on. These challenges are not insurmountable. With the collective strength of our diaspora, we can transform them into opportunities," the President said.

‎He said the Federal Government would institutionalise the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative, expand diaspora medical missions across the country, strengthen partnerships between diaspora professionals and Nigerian teaching hospitals, leverage telemedicine, encourage diaspora-led investments in hospitals and research centres, and introduce incentives for medical professionals abroad willing to return home to practise or invest.

‎Also speaking at the event, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended FMBN for the forthcoming launch of the Diaspora NHF Mortgage Loan, describing it as a significant step towards making affordable homeownership more accessible to Nigerians in the Diaspora.

‎She also highlighted NiDCOM's continued efforts in protecting the welfare of Nigerians abroad, facilitating humanitarian interventions, promoting diaspora investment and remittances, and advancing initiatives such as the proposed Diaspora Investment Fund, National Diaspora Health Corps and continued advocacy for diaspora voting.

‎The event, themed "Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development," was attended by representatives of the Senate and House Committees on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro and Hon. Tochukwu Okere; the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye; President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti;  as well as distinguished Nigerian professionals from across the world and other key government stakeholders.
