Sustainable Housing Finance is Key to Economic Growth, Job Creation - Osidi
... Minister Oyedele advocates unlocking domestic capital for national development
‎The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Shehu Usman Osidi, has said sustainable housing finance is a critical catalyst for economic growth, job creation and national development, urging development finance institutions to mobilise domestic capital and strengthen partnerships to accelerate Nigeria's development.
‎Osidi, who was represented by the Group Head, Strategy and Performance Management, Mr. Oladapo Fakeye, stated this in a goodwill message at the 6th Annual General Assembly 2026 of the Association of Nigerian Development Finance Institutions (ANDFI) held at Fraser Suites, Abuja.
‎He reaffirmed FMBN's commitment to its mandate of providing affordable housing through the administration of the National Housing Fund (NHF) Scheme and the provision of accessible mortgage financing, stressing that housing finance remains central to Nigeria's socio-economic development.
‎"We recognise that sustainable housing finance is not only necessary for improving the quality of life of our citizens, but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation and national development," Osidi said.

‎He further called for stronger collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing among development finance institutions to address emerging economic challenges and deepen development impact.
‎"As members of the development finance ecosystem, we must continue to strengthen cooperation, leverage innovation and share knowledge to address economic challenges and create new opportunities that will enhance our development impact," he stated.
‎In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, H.E. Taiwo Oyedele, said Nigeria's long-term prosperity depends on unlocking domestic capital.
‎He identified five strategic priorities for unlocking domestic capital, including unlocking household wealth, deepening institutional capital, expanding credit enhancement mechanisms, strengthening the capital market and strengthening development finance institutions.
‎"The future belongs to countries that successfully integrate public finance, private finance, institutional finance, development finance and capital markets into one coherent ecosystem," he said while reaffirming the Federal Government's commitment to working with development finance institutions and other stakeholders to drive enterprise development, industrialisation and inclusive economic growth.
‎The event featured two panel sessions on "Capital Market Dynamics and Access Challenge for MSMEs" and "Financing Gaps and Systemic Reforms for Private Enterprise Growth Initiatives," during which participants explored practical strategies for strengthening Nigeria's development finance architecture and improving access to long-term capital.
‎Themed "Unlocking Domestic Capital for Development Financing," FMBN's participation at the 6th Annual General Assembly reinforced its strategic role as a leading development finance institution committed to expanding access to affordable housing and supporting national economic development through sustainable housing finance.
‎It attracted key stakeholders, including the Chairman of ANDFI and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Industry, Dr. Olasupo Olusi; the Regional and Country Director of the African Development Bank, Dr. Abdul Kamara; the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Agriculture, Mr. Ayo Sontinrin; the Executive Director, Business Development, NEXIM Bank, Hon. Stella Okotete; as well as other development finance partners and FMBN staff across various levels.
